About the album

Bring together eight or ten CDs of most of Mozart’s chamber music in a boxed set? Schubert’s piano music? Chopin’s? Dvorak’s? Debussy’s? The Beethoven symphonies? The idea is certainly not new. But the unusual method definitely is. This time it isn’t a record company delving more or less carefully through its archives, choosing performances to form a vast panorama, one that inevitably results in compromises, since the company must select from its own catalogue. In our case, the entire Diapason magazine team is part of the project, searching high and low for the crème de la crème. The same uncompromising rigour we use to select five, six or seven gems from the flood of new record- ings each month was put into practice here, to create a series that, one boxed set after another, will gradually build an unprecedented ideal record library. Let it be understood that such teamwork is both a virtue and a necessity. We don’t rely on hazy memories or include recordings thought to be definitive merely out of habit or laziness; we make sure that everyone’s memory is refreshed through comparative listening. Each of the selections in the set is the result of patient and scrupulous listening, divided amongst the more than 30 specialists of the Diapason team. When necessary, we base our criteria on rarity: this helps to choose between top performances—and gives us the perfect chance to bring some forgotten treasures to light. Should we have chosen homogeneous groups, bet on a single interpreter, for example the marvellous and imitable Horszowski and Szigeti for Mozart’s violin and piano sonatas? We decided to go in the opposite direction for three reasons: to avoid competing with record companies that may still have this rendition in their catalogues; to lessen the risk of including a version that many people already own; and particularly, to showcase a variety of different approaches to the same composer by confronting one against the other. This can be cruel when a version is mediocre or merely pretty. But at this level of excellence, it will always be fascinating.

Jascha Heifetz, widely regarded as one of the greatest performing artists of all time, was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, which was then occupied by Russia, on 2 February 1901. Heifetz entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1910. He studied first with I.R. Nalbandian, and then entered the class of Leopold Auer in 1911. By then his public performances were already creating a sensation. One outdoor concert in Odessa in the summer of 1911 reportedly drew as many as 8,000 people. The young Nathan Milstein, who was in the audience, recalled that the police surrounded the boy when he finished playing to protect him from the surging crowd.

Alfred Brendel (piano)

What pianist Alfred Brendel has achieved is no small feat. According to contrived musico-sociological theories, it is even impossible: flourishing in the current music world in full instinctive and spiritual freedom without any form of epigonism. Brendel has played roughly the entire known concert literature, given recitals, investigated the concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart and even ventured upon the concerto of Schoenberg, actualized Mozart’s solo works, convincingly realized Bach on the piano, given a new meaning to Haydn’s piano works, brought Lisztz Variations to light and given the late Schubert new prestige by making an expedition to his soul, with al its melancholy, cheerfulness, sadness and domesticity , during that special undertaking. He has written down his insights in a book and ventures at set times upon Beethoven and Schubert marathons on the concert stage.
Based on his looks, Brendel is an unlikely hero. His hair is almost always tousled, his forehead constantly frowned, his teeth are featured to prominently and he enters the stage as a slightly absent-minded professor, who could pass for an oversized Woody Allen. And anyone who sees him in close up for a long time during a performance, must be resistant to psychedelic effects.
Fortunately, an antihero also has very attractive sides, and anyone who listen to him trough albums, is not exposed to distraction and can fully enjoy his clear, intelligent and beautifully nuanced Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt. Thus he slowly began his international career, only noticed by conoisseurs.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose actual name is Joannes Chrysotomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a composer, pianist, violinist and conductor from the classical period, born in Salzburg. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, Mozart is considered to be one of the most influential composers of all of music's history. Mozart was a child prodigy. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, Mozart is considered to be one of the most influential composers of all of music's history. Within the classical tradition, he was able to develop new musical concepts which left an everlasting impression on all the composers that came after him. Together with Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven he is part of the First Viennese School. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. From 1763 he traveled with his family through all of Europe for three years and from 1769 he traveled to Italy and France with his father Leopold after which he took residence in Paris. On July 3rd, 1778, his mother passed away and after a short stay in Munich with the Weber family, his father urged him to return to Salzburg, where he was once again hired by the Bishop. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death.
